  • How do you beam a BMW M2 into a computer game? This commercial for BMW and the famous game Rocket League will show you how. Together with Simon & Paul and Family Film Christopher Schlierf tried to bring the bold idea by Jung von Matt to life. The challenge on this spot was to target not only the BMW fans but also engage the target audience of the gamer community based around the very popular game “Rocket League”. To achieve this Christopher Schlierf was looking for a genre driven look that reminds people of Star Wars, Star Trek, Bladerunner and the Marvel movies. The set design and art department job for this project was a huge task and Christopher Schlierf precisely broke down all the elements that needed to be built as early as possible with moodboards, 3D mock ups and 3D sets. To wrap the cast into unique uniforms that speak a futuristic language the Director developed designs on the drawing board together with the costume designer. To give the film a very dramatic tension able look, they worked very closely together with their DOP Jan David Gunther to come up with complicated lighting rigs. Those were necessary to illuminate the set, actors and car in the right way and set a base for all VFX later on in post. The integration of the lightnings, hovering car and especially the portal needed very detailed descriptions and direction. Christopher Schlierf therefore shared moodboards, animation references and detailed feedback with the VFX studio on every shot. Game studio Psyonix animated the in game sequences according to their description, moodfilms and storyboard frames. Clients on both sides, BMW and Psyonix were happy and impressed with the output that was exactly what we promised in the treatment and storyboard months ahead.
